Nick got them a table far away from the other diners the next afternoon at the popular eatery in a private room as a favor from the owner who he had known for some time. He asked for them to be left alone for a while before having a waiter see what they wanted to eat Nick wanted to get what he felt like was going to be a bombshell for both Ella and James out of the way before they ate. Plus, he was not really sure anyone was going to have much of an appetite after he told them everything that he had gotten them together to hear.

Nick took a deep breath and began. He laid out, in as much detail as he wanted to remember, the incident in his office the night before and then apologized profusely to Ella for drumming up the tale about being sick.

“I just did not want you to worry, Ella…and I promise this is the very last time I will keep you in the dark about anything, OK?”

Ella nodded slowly after taking a long sip of water in a shaky hand thankful that Nick was still in one piece. She was not thrilled that he had deceived her once again, but this time she understood his motive and quite frankly was glad he had done so…the real story last night would have thrown her into a major frenzy.

“So it’s just resign your position or we find some magical way to pay these guys off in the next month?” James asked.

“In a nutshell,” Nick replied. “Since you had set this deal up with them, I think they would prefer to deal just with you. My feeling, though it was not stated specifically, was that they think I have been responsible for the lack of timely payments for some reason since I am the CEO. My guess is that if I am out of the picture, then they will ease off the pressure and create a more realistic arrangement with a new CEO at the helm. They just want their money, James…period…just like you said.”

“So what are you going to do, Nick?” James asked.

“The only thing I can do…after Ella and I are married and we take some time for a honeymoon, I will officially resign as CEO and step away from any involvement in the company.”

James felt totally unprepared for that announcement.

“So who is the new CEO, Nick?”

He looked at James and did not reply.

“No, no, no…” James quickly shot back as he felt like the floor had just fallen away from him. Not me, Nick!”

“Why not, James? You know the company inside and out and are the only one that is going to be able to resolve this mafia situation.”

James then felt anger rise in his body. It was like, he felt, that His brother was taking the easy way out and leaving him holding the bag.
